Taylor Swift to be nominated for her first Oscar

A blank spot on Taylor Swift’s awards shelf will soon be filled by an Oscar, but not for All Too Well.

There are some positive and negative developments for Swifties in the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences’s announcement of the shortlists for numerous 2023 Oscar categories. Taylor’s short film All Too Well, starring Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien, was not among the 15 finalists still in the running for a nomination for best-live action short film, hence its chances of winning an Oscar for best short film in a live action category were abruptly dashed.

The Grammy winner, though, is still a contender in the music category, which is more well-known. The song “Carolina” by Taylor from Where the Crawdads Sing is still up for the Best Original Song award. Therefore, Taylor might end up getting her first Oscar nomination in the 2023 ceremony. On the shortlist of original song performers, she is not the only pop icon.

The remaining 15 tracks include “My Mind & Me” by Selena Gomez from the documentary of the same name, “Lift Me Up” by Rihanna from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and “Hold My Hand” by Oscar winner Lady Gaga from Top Gun: Maverick.

Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds, who are married to Taylor’s close friend Blake Lively, for their song “Good Afternoon” from the Christmas movie Spirited, are a potentially unexpected addition to the music shortlist. The Weeknd’s song “Nothing Is Lost (You Give Me Strength)” from Avatar: The Way of Water is also included on the list.

When the final finalists are revealed, the other contenders for best original song, besides him and Gaga, may also receive their first Oscar nominations.

Taylor would need to win the Tony in order to complete the EGOT, should she be nominated and win the Oscar. The artist has earned 11 Grammy Awards throughout her career and, in 2015, the AMEX Unstaged: Taylor Swift Experience awarded an Emmy for Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media – Original Interactive Program. (And given that she’s about to start working on her feature directorial debut, the singer might someday make a comeback in the directing category.)

On January 24, the 2023 Oscar nominees will be revealed. The ceremony, which is scheduled to telecast live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on March 12, will once again be emceed by Jimmy Kimmel.
