  • The Witcher: Blood Origin will be the third and fourth seasons of the series.
  • The miniseries is a prequel based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s books.
  • The main series will end with The Lady of the Lake, according to creator Lauren Schmidt Hissrich.

‘The Witcher’ has grown to be Netflix’s biggest hit over the years. The Witcher: Blood Origin, a miniseries prequel based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher books, will be the third and fourth seasons of the series, which has already lasted two seasons and has a third and fourth season in the works.

However, considering the first season’s significant shifts and apparently murky timeframe, viewers have frequently questioned whether creator Lauren Schmidt Hissrich has a clear vision for how the main series will wrap up.

The Witcher: Blood Origin co-creator Declan de Barra and Hissrich recently spoke with Steve Weintraub about the series’ future and potential directions for the expanded universe. When considering the entire series, Hissrich explained:

‘It has been my goal with my executives at Netflix to always have an endpoint in mind, because, to me, when you start just writing stories without knowing where they’re going, you can get lost. And what I think is so interesting about what we have figured out, to answer your question in two ways, yes, I absolutely know where the series is going to end. I know what season it’s going to end, I know how it’s going to end, which is very, very exciting.’

Hissrich continued by stating that the main series would end with The Lady of the Lake, the fifth book in the Witcher trilogy by Sapkowski. However, given the novel touches on Arthurian legend, there is a lot of room for the plot to grow outside of the series.

“I was asked a lot, are there going to be other sequels and prequels and spinoffs? I think, certainly, Sapkowski’s books are kind of limitless in a lot of ways,” said Hissrich. Joking that if the series continues long enough, she might grow old and end up portraying Geralt.

Even while you may have read the novels, that doesn’t necessarily imply you have a road plan for the coming seasons. As Hissrich continues:

‘I think a lot of people believe that you sort of go into a season of television saying it’s going to be this book, but clearly that’s something that we have not been able to do because there are some books that are like Blood of Elves, which Season 2 sort of loosely was based around. It didn’t have enough action to keep us going, so we ended up having to bring parts of Baptism of Fire into it. Parts of the earlier short stories, I mean Declan’s episode, “A Grain of Truth,” was what kicked off Season 2. So immediately we know that we have to be flexible with how the books are split up versus how the seasons are split up and Declan’s right. I’ve been sort of turning that in my head since the very beginning.’

Therefore, don’t count on the path to always be clear; given the amount of time travel, realm visits, and magic use, things are sure to get muddled. Nothing is definite, and there may be other spin-offs and stories to tell.
