Cory Wharton Reveals Baby Daughter Is Off a Ventilator After Surgery

Cory Wharton‘s 7-month-old daughter, is recovering.

The 31-year-old Challenge star stated on his Instagram Story on Friday that his daughter is doing well after undergoing open-heart surgery earlier in the week.

“Maya has turned off the ventilator!” Wharton posted this next to a photo of himself feeding his daughter, who is resting in a hospital bed. “She is no longer being intubated. We will continue to make progress in the right direction.”

On Wednesday, the Teen Mom alum uploaded a selfie of himself cradling his daughter before her operation. At the time, he requested that “everyone keep us in their prayers and keep praying for her and the specialists who will be operating on her heart.”

“We’ve been awaiting this day for months, all the worry that has piled up,” the father of three continued. “I can’t wait for her heart to be repaired. Then we can finish this chapter.”

On June 1, Wharton and his girlfriend Taylor Selfridge welcomed their third child, Maya. They disclosed 10 days later that she had been diagnosed with tricuspid atresia, a congenital cardiac abnormality.

In an Instagram post, Selfridge disclosed that she was around 22 weeks pregnant when Maya was diagnosed.

“Our lives were turned upside down in a matter of seconds,” she wrote, adding that Maya “was born doing so much better than predicted, and thanks to excellent cardiologists, we were able to get a stent put in place instead of the initial open heart surgery.”

Their daughter subsequently had her first operation at the age of six days, which Selfridge described as making her feel “extremely powerless in caring for my own child.”

Maya will need another open-heart surgery when she is 3 or 4 years old, according to Wharton, to get her heart back in functioning order.

Maya was admitted to the hospital in October for “right and left heart catheterization with angiography, utilizing plastic tubes in the heart to evaluate pressure and oxygen levels.”
