Whoopi Goldberg used a recent appearance to pay tribute to an old friend.
The EGOT winner, 67, made a public plea to British audiences on Friday’s Loose Women talk show, revealing that she’s waiting for one more original Sister Act costar to return before concluding the trilogy with the impending third chapter.
“I want Maggie Smith to know that I’m keeping the part of Mother Superior for you because I just can’t do it with anyone else,” Goldberg stated into the camera.
“So, if you need me to come over here and shoot it and do whatever we have to do,” she added. “But Maggie, we don’t want to do it without you.”
Goldberg and Smith, both 88, co-starred in the 1992 comedy Deloris (Goldberg), about a nightclub singer who hides out in a convent after witnessing a mob hit and quickly turns the nuns’ choir into a worldwide celebrity. They both reappeared for Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit in 1993.
Smith has kept busy in her golden years, most notably appearing in Downton Abbey: A New Era last year, repeating her role as Violet Grantham from the blockbuster series.
Meanwhile, Goldberg has revealed her Wishlist for additional Sister Act 3 cast members, indicating that she would like Keke Palmer, Lizzo, and Nicki Minaj to join the cast. Palmer, 29, has since stated that she is “prepared for whatever.”
In 2020, Goldberg will star in and produce the long-awaited third picture for Disney+, alongside co-producer Tyler Perry.
