Following last year’s Will Smith slap controversy, Bill Kramer, the CEO of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, has revealed in a new interview that a ‘crisis team’ will be in place for this year’s ceremony.

A 'crisis team' will be in place at this year's Oscars ceremony following last year's Will Smith slap controversy.

Following the controversy at the Oscars last year when actor Will Smith jumped onto the stage and slapped host Chris Rock during the live ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has established a crisis team for this year to better handle any unexpected situations.

Bill Kramer, the CEO of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, addressed recent concerns about this year’s ceremony, which will take place next month, in a new interview last July. The Oscars’ ratings have dropped to their lowest point in the show’s 90-year history over the last two years. AMPAS president Janet Yang also stated that the organization’s response was ‘inadequate’ at the Oscar nominees luncheon last month.

In a new interview with Time Magazine, Bill Kramer stated that a “crisis team” is in place this year. He stated, “…we have a whole crisis team, something we’ve never had before, and many plans in place. We’ve run many scenarios. So it is our hope that we will be prepared for anything that we may not anticipate right now but that we’re planning for just in case it does happen.”

In response to the unexpected slap that sparked outrage last year, Bill stated, “Because of last year, we’ve become more open to the possibility of anything happening at the Oscars. But these crisis plans—the crisis communication teams and structures we have in place—allow us to say this is the group that we have to gather very quickly. This is how we all connect. This is the representative. This will be the declaration. And, obviously, depending on the specifics of the crisis, and let’s hope nothing happens and we never need to use these, we already have frameworks in place that we can modify.”
