Kate Middleton puts a lot of consideration into her wardrobe decisions, and her St. Patrick’s Day attire for her holiday debut as the new honorary Colonel of the Irish Guards was no different.

Kate and Prince William went to the Irish Guards at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade at Aldershot on Friday, continuing a long-standing tradition. The Princess of Wales normally commemorates the occasion by donning green, the color most often associated with the holiday, but this year she made the unexpected choice to dress in a teal Catherine Walker & Co coat dress with matching accessories.

Although the color choice was unanticipated, there is a clever explanation for it. Princess Kate’s attire matched the 1st Battalion Irish Guards’ bearskin caps’ plumes to a tee. St. Patrick’s blue was chosen for the plume because it matches the mantle and sash of the Order of St. Patrick.

The royal family wore blue in June when they began Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee festivities with Trooping the Colour. Saint. Patrick’s blue was worn by Queen Elizabeth when she entered the Buckingham Palace balcony, paying homage to the traditional national color of Ireland and a possible symbol of sovereignty. Also, many royal ladies chose hues of blue to go with the ruler.

The Little Book of Color author and behavioral color psychologist Karen Haller previously discussed the royal family’s penchant for wearing blue in an interview with My London, observing that it signifies “their coming together as a family, expressing themselves as a coherent unit.”

Darker blues, according to color psychology, convey that you are in a position of power, trustworthiness, and dependability, according to Haller, who spoke to the publication. You treat your responsibilities seriously and with a focused commitment.

Princess Kate also made thoughtful accessory selections for the St. Patrick’s Day procession. She wore a beautiful shamrock brooch with a little emerald in the center, along with diamond and emerald earrings that added a touch of traditional green to her attire.

According to The Court Jeweller, the brooch is owned by the Irish Guards and is leased to the royal ladies connected to the regiment. It was previously worn by Princess Anne and the Queen Mother before Kate.

At the occasion, speeches by Prince William and Princess Kate both emphasized the change in royal responsibilities. Recently, King Charles appointed his daughter-in-law as the new honorary Colonel of the regiment, replacing Prince William, who now serves as the Welsh Guards’ equivalency along with his Prince of Wales title.
