Ruben Ostlund is elected head of the Cannes Film Festival jury
Ruben Ostlund said, “I am thrilled, proud, and humbled to be trusted with the distinction of Jury president for this year’s Competition at the Festival de Cannes.” The director’s “Triangle of Sorrow,” which took home the Palme d’Or for best picture the previous year, examined ideas of privilege and beauty by taking two models on a lavish cruise and abandoning them there along with some of the crew and wealthy passengers.
He additionally received the award in 2017 for his film “The Square,” a spoof on the art industry. After being disrupted by COVID-19 for several years, the event last year resumed its regular schedule. The cinema industry has struggled to regain audiences after the epidemic forced the closure of theatres around the world and ceased production due to the popularity of streaming.
The second-largest theatre chain in the world, Cineworld Group, declared bankruptcy in September and announced on February 24 that it had been unsuccessful in finding a buyer for the entire business. French actor Vincent Lindon presided over last year’s festival, which marked the 75th anniversary edition.
Former jury presidents have included actors Gerard Depardieu and Isabelle Huppert, as well as American directors Francis Ford Coppola and Spike Lee. The jury presidents are in charge of directing the panel that evaluates the movies competing for the festival’s major awards. m”The cinema has a certain quality,” declared Ostlund. In contrast to when we dopamine scroll in front of the individual screens, it causes us to reflect in a new way.
The festival this year is held from May 16 through May 27.
