In a recent interview, Kate Winslet claimed that the “door” from the legendary Titanic scene may not have been a door at all. This has sparked a burning question among fans since the movie’s release: Why couldn’t both Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Winslet) have clung to the wooden piece and floated until help arrived?

In her recent appearance on the Australian show “The Project” to promote her biopic “Lee”, Winslet addressed the ongoing debate by stating that what fans refer to as a “door” was a broken piece of a banister from the ship. She sensed that the interviewer would ask about the door, which, as she explained, has become a ubiquitous topic in popular culture since the movie’s release in 1997.

She explained that she had encountered these questions many times and was somewhat surprised that people incorrectly referred to it as a door. The Oscar winner said, “I thought, ‘He’s busting out the Titanic question and next he’s gonna ask me about the door.’ I knew it. But, you know, what I will say that’s interesting is people keep referring to it as a door. It wasn’t even a door.”

The contentious question of whether both Jack and Rose could fit on the piece of debris instead of sinking with the Titanic has entertained audiences for many years. James Cameron, the director of “Titanic”, even commissioned scientific research on this issue, using stuntmen to model four different scenarios to explore various positions of the debris and determine if both characters could have floated on it. However, his conclusions led him to believe that Jack wouldn’t take any risks that could jeopardize Rose’s safety at that moment.
Winstel further added, “It’s a piece of banister, like stairway or something that had broken off. Who knows if [DiCaprio] could’ve [fit] on there or not. Honestly, I don’t have any insights here that anyone else hasn’t already tried to figure out.”

Earlier this year, Kate Winslet joked that Leonardo DiCaprio is probably over the whole “door” question phase and suggested that he might have developed something like “PTSD” from being asked so many questions about the scene. Winslet also shared additional behind-the-scenes details with Josh Horowitz, revealing that they filmed the famous scene in a tank filled with waist-high water.

The cast and crew had to cope with the continuous sound of rushing water that persisted throughout the filming. Winslet noted that the water level was so low that between takes, she could stand up, walk to the edge of the tank, and climb back onto the banister piece to resume filming.
