Onir, a filmmaker, criticized “a lot of politicians” on Friday for criticising Deepika Padukone and Shah Rukh Khan’s new song, “Besharam Rang.” The two actors are shown in the song, which is from the upcoming movie Pathaan, romancing in Spain while dressed differently.

Taking to Twitter, Onir wrote, “Can’t imagine that the most important thing to debate for a bunch of politicians (whose claim to fame is propagating hate and dividing the country & instigating violence) & the mainstream media is the costume worn by two actors for a song!” He also added the hashtags–unemployment, inflation and climate crisis.

Onir also reposted a video of MLA Sadhvi Pragya criticising Pathaan that was uploaded by a news outlet to Twitter. He wrote, “No point of film certification board/judiciary/law enforcement agencies .. now goons will decide what we watch. Terrible times …”

Onir educated a Twitter user on Thursday when they posted images of the song and stated, “What kind of a husband allows or tolerates public molestation of his wife for a few bucks? Just asking !!!”

Onir replied, “Yucks .., sick mentality . Use of words like ‘allows’, ‘ tolerate” shows that he belongs to that tribe of men who thinks an husband owns the women . And only a vulgar mindset could make a montage like this. Retired and now nothing better to do than zoom in pics n spread hate.”

Actors Swara Bhaskar and Prakash Raj had previously appeared on stage to discuss the song and the movie. sharing a screenshot of a news story suggesting that Madhya Pradesh’s BJP-led administration would forbid the publication of Pathaan, Swara wrote, “Miliye humare desh ke sattadhari netaon se. Abhinetriyon ke kapde dekhne se fursat milti, to kya pata kuch kar bhi lete (Meet our country’s leaders in power. They may have done some work, had they had some time left after oggling at actor’s dresses).”

On December 12, the song Besharam Rang was made available online, and it quickly became the subject of debate. While many people enjoyed the upbeat song, some deemed Besharam Rang to be offensive due to the costumes’ colour scheme. A few protestors in Indore even burned effigies of Deepika and Shah Rukh as part of their demonstration against Pathaan and the Besharam Rang song.

On January 25, 2023, Siddharth Anand’s Pathaan is slated to open in theatres. In addition to Shah Rukh and Deepika, John Abraham also appears in the movie.
