For the first time since his movie All That Breathes lost to Daniel Roher’s Navalny at the 95th Academy Awards, director Shaunak Sen commented on Instagram. It received a nomination for Best Documentary Feature Film. The director shared photos from the ceremony more than a day after the Oscars, and in one of them, he even flashed the letter “L” on his forehead as a symbol of his failure.

Shaunak wrote, “So many chin-uppy messages of encouragement/support since yesterday. We were low for about an hour, but we’re soon distracted into equanimity amidst the whirl of glittery people and things. Brain is still to wrap around the fact that this is the end of this chapter.”

“Next we’ll be working hard to figure India distribution (HBO has ended it’s deal in India with Hotstar it appears, and we’re figuring out which platform it’ll come out on now). For now, very very nice to share this bizarre, swollen day with the brothers, and so many members of our crew. Hugest congratulations to all the winning films from India,” he added.

Shaunak continued to release pictures from the Oscars evening in “chronological” order. It’s a great way to start your day. In one of the photos, Shaunak stood in front of the Oscars mannequin with a ‘L’ sign taped to his forehead. There were also some more after-party moments added.

The national capital of Everything That Breathes discusses climate change in India. The movies All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, Fire of Love, A House Built of Splinters, and Navalny were also nominated in its place. The highly regarded movie had previously taken home the Golden Eye award for outstanding documentary at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize: Documentary at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.

Mohammad Saud and Nadeem Shehzad, two brothers who operate out of a dark basement in Delhi, are the centre of the plot. Other birds battling to breathe in the city’s toxic air, including black kites, are also rescued and treated. India won the top prize in two distinct categories even though it didn’t win an Oscar in 2023. The original song category at the Oscars was won by SS Rajamouli’s RRR song Naatu Naatu. The Best Documentary Short Film award went to The Elephant Whisperers by Guneet Monga.
