Daniel Durant and Selma Blair know about the struggle. Daniel, the third deaf performer in the show’s history, and Selma, who fought through her MS diagnosis in a remarkably impressive way, have both inspired viewers with their respective journeys as competitors on the current season of Dancing With the Stars.

Selma’s stint on the DWTS had to stop early due to a doctor’s advice, but Daniel stated the two forged an undeniable

“She was a big fan of mine because of CODA and I was touched,” Daniel exclusively told E! News. “I knew we would support each other already. We’re in the same community, and we understand each other in some ways. She’s a brilliant actress and seeing her dance was so touching and impressive. I always congratulated her and talked to her.”

Since she left, Selma has kept their friendship alive by encouraging Daniel by sending encouraging comments on his Instagram pictures.

She is there, in spirit and in heart, Daniel said. “It significantly alters everything. It means so much to me to see her support on social media. That is the real Selma. She is a lovely woman.”

When asked if he had considered dancing with Selma on the season finale later this month, Daniel’s eyes widened despite the fact that he has his sights set on the Dancing With the Stars semifinals, which air live on Nov. 14.

“Oh, I would love that,” he said. “That would be so awesome. That’s a great idea. I might have to keep that one. I would love to dance with Selma. That would be so cool to show the world.”

Whatever happens with Daniel’s journey on the program, he will always remember his dance from the Nov. 7 episode, in which he and partner Britt Stewart danced a portion of their routine without music to try to convey to the public what it’s like for Daniel to dance without the benefit of a hearing.

Many people in the ballroom, including judge Derek Hough, were moved to tears by the performance.

“We got to show the world, and it was so nice to see the reaction,” Daniel said. “I feel like I’ve touched a bunch of people, especially Derek. I was happy to connect with him about that. I’m just happy to share that with the world.”

Live coverage of Dancing with the Stars begins on Disney+ at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
