Henry Cavill has turned to social media in response to James Gunn’s recent declaration regarding Superman to inform fans that he would not be repeating his role as the embodiment of hope. Cavill’s statements are quite professional and upbeat for the audience, urging Superman fans all around the world to continue their devotion to the character, even though it isn’t an easy break after his recent resurgence in the Black Adam.

The star wrote the following in response to the news:

“I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck and the happiest of fortunes. For those who have been by my side through the years… we can mourn for a bit, but then we must remember… Superman is still around. Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there! My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It’s been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards.”

Although this announcement contradicts Cavill’s previous return to the suit, Gunn, Safran, and Cavill deserve praise for not letting this potential return go on. While there are undoubtedly many Man of Steel fans out there, it is evident that Cavill’s interpretation of the character would not fit with the new projects Safran and Gunn are creating. This is probably only the most current in a lengthy string of casting changes and DC Studios revisions (following the recent cancellation of Wonder Woman 3).

Beginning with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel in 2013, Cavill played Clark Kent/Superman in four or five DC movies. Following their confrontation in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, the two actors reunited for the 2017 team-up movie Justice League. In the HBO Max adaptation of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which had additional scenes, Cavill reprised his role. The actor announced in October that he would be reprising the role after his most recent appearance, which was in the Black Adam end credits scene with Dwayne Johnson. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out that way.
