Jennifer Coolidge should be two for two in terms of well-deserved Emmy Awards after its dramatic Season 2 finale. Coolidge played Tanya in Season 1 of The White Lotus, and it’s safe to say that she utterly merited the Emmy she got for the part. She did, however, achieve new heights in Season 2, and this season more than any other did a better job of preparing her for award season.

Since her debut performance in American Pie in 1999, Coolidge has become a familiar face thanks to a variety of well-known roles. This made her getting her first Emmy Award for HBO’s prestigious series The White Lotus twenty years into her career all the more unexpected and appreciated. Those who expected Coolidge to perform at a higher caliber than before were not dissatisfied when she finished a second season of the show for which she won the Emmy.

Tanya Mc Quoid from Coolidge was the key character connecting the first two seasons of this anthology series. In Season 1, Tanya was a complete emotional disaster and completely out of it. Without a doubt, she was a sophisticated and nuanced character, but she was also a brilliant comic relief.

Because of this, Coolidge, a legendary comic relief actress, had the chance to show that her genuine skill is in providing the characters she is best known for portraying some depth. Anyone who may have thought Coolidge to be one-dimensional or frivolous based on her prior body of work was likely to be impressed by Tanya’s time in Season 1. Tanya’s time in Season 1 was nuanced. But unlike Season 1 Tanya, who provided Coolidge more chances to grow than she typically had, Season 2 Tanya gave her a fresh set of capabilities to show off, allowing her to reach new heights in her abilities.

For a character making their second-season debut, Tanya started Season 2 in an uncharacteristically cozy setting. Fans cheered to spot a familiar face at the brand-new but otherwise identical White Lotus resort. She comes across as wild as ever with the same distinctively delivered one-liners and ebullient, fumbling manner. However, Coolidge took on the job of giving Tanya to audiences in a charming, recognized light, setting her up perfectly for a story arc that would ultimately crush fans’ hearts.

After watching the Season 2 finale, it’s hard to picture any other actor portraying the character of Tanya. This isn’t simply because it seems impossible for Coolidge to not give every job an individual flair; obviously, this is a factor as well. Though she continued to display some of her shallowness right up until the very end, pleading with a man she had just shot to tell her whether her obviously betraying husband was having an affair, Tanya showed herself to be far from as hollow and irredeemably removed from reality as she had appeared in the beginning.

Coolidge’s portrayal of Tanya allowed the audience to see a fearful, empathetic, alone core that wasn’t entirely built into the character’s writing. Tanya’s persona was largely based on a desperate need for direction, approval, and attention in any form.

Even though the Season 2 finale had a colorful moment that demonstrated that all of the other characters were leaving Season 2 happy and at least half healed, Tanya’s death was terrible to see, and it undoubtedly shocked audiences and left them with a foul taste in their mouths. But to envision Tanya played by anyone other than Tanya would be to imagine a version of Tanya that would not leave viewers in sadness after her passing. Tanya may be fundamentally depressed in a sympathetic way, but she wouldn’t manage to touch our hearts if Coolidge hadn’t meticulously created a life for her around a few sentences.
