Tom Cruise is one of the largest and most financially successful movie stars of his generation. The incredibly enormous success that his legacy sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, enjoyed this past year has served to confirm that if anything. Cruise is once again at the top of his game thanks to the movie, which earned more than $1.4 billion at the global box office, nearly universal acclaim from critics and moviegoers, and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Picture. Not bad for a veteran of the movie industry for 40 years who has just reached his sixth decade.

Nevertheless, despite all of Cruise’s success in Hollywood, one particular goal remains unachieved: the Academy Award. Although the Academy has only ever given him a nomination for the coveted golden statuette, despite his consistently strong performances and exceptional level of variety and versatility in his profession, he has always been a talented actor. When an actor has an amazing resume of box office successes and enjoys a long history of A-level prestige in the industry, it may be simple or alluring to take him or her for granted. Such popularity and Cruise is no exception, can obscure an audience’s capacity to remember that a specific performer still has a tremendous deal of power and influence in the suspension of disbelief.

Previous Oscar nominations for Tom Cruise

Early in 1990, he received his first acting nomination for his role as real-life Vietnam War veteran Ron Kovic in Oliver Stone’s Born on the Fourth of July. He was nominated for Best Actor. He advanced to the next level of his career with this performance by taking on a sad portrayal of Kovic’s wartime experiences and hardships following suffering a debilitating injury.

The actor had already shown some dramatic chops in movies like The Color of Money and Rain Man, but Stone’s picture would require Cruise to draw on new tools in his performance toolbox. Nothing Cruise has done will prepare you for what he performs in Born on the Fourth of July, wrote Roger Ebert in his review of the movie, in what is likely the most reverent compliment the actor has ever received.

After seven years, he received his second Best Actor nomination for the popular comedy-drama, Jerry Maguire. Cruise nailed one of his most enduring parts as a funny and quick-witted sports agent, giving Cameron Crowe’s movie light and approachable sense of comedy. Additionally, he once again showed his theatrical prowess by skillfully portraying a man’s existential battle and moral crisis in a competitive field. He would once more leave the Academy Awards ceremony empty-handed, but Jerry Maguire earned him his second Golden Globe.

The epic drama Magnolia, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, was out a few years later. Instead of becoming the star of the show, Cruise made an unorthodox choice by joining a cast of outstanding actors and creating the intriguing role of Frank T.J. Mackey. Being one of the most sexist, vulgar, and unlikeable characters to appear on screen in contemporary cinema, Mackey is a departure for the actor.

At the same time, the multifaceted character is absolutely captivating and one that viewers can identify with both in Anderson’s writing and Cruise’s gutsy acting. In line with Born on the Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire, he won a Golden Globe for playing Mackey but was unsuccessful in winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. He has subsequently returned his prizes to the HFPA.

Tom Cruise’s fame causes us to overlook his talent

The aforementioned 40+ movies Cruise has starred in include a number of his standout performances. He has portrayed characters in films including Risky Business, A Few Good Men, Eyes Wide Shut, and Collateral that range from the boy next door to a cold-blooded killer. Despite the fact that Top Gun propelled Cruise into the spotlight as an international celebrity at the age of 24, he has stayed generally grounded and adaptable in his pursuit of parts and material that test his acting chops.

In 2022, however, the superstar has probably become more well-known to fans as a top-notch action hero than the talented actor he’s always been, thanks in large part to the Mission Impossible franchise and its enviable quality of maturing like a good wine with each new chapter. He continuously and really reminds us that the action and stunts are icing on the cake when he’s not defying gravity, holding his breath for an absurd period of time, or taking part in other activities that only a small number of the most adventurous adrenaline seekers would ever conceive of.

The thrilling and nerve-wracking nature of his world-saving adventures would amount to hollow thrills deserving of contempt if spectators don’t accept what he’s selling as an actor. The performance abilities and instincts he possesses are ultimately what keep audiences returning to his films, despite the fact that his daredevil attitude surely contributes to this.

Unquestionably, Tom Cruise Exudes a Commanding Presence

Since his role as the gullible innocent Joel Goodson in the 1983 film Risky Business, Cruise has a natural talent for capturing and maintaining an audience’s attention. His stern expression, hard glance, and earnest delivery all say eloquently about his charismatic acting style. His commitment to giving each character a level of authenticity and humanity, whether he’s portraying an Irish immigrant at the turn of the century, a tortured husband navigating the rough waters of marital distrust, or a disgruntled military commander learning the ways of the Samurai, is unwavering. Cruise doesn’t take his art or the opportunity to practice it professionally for granted if there is one thing that can be said about him with certainty.

Another consistent indicator of Cruise’s acting prowess has been his ability to compete on-screen with legendary actors, especially in his early career. In The Color of Money and Rain Man, both of which won Academy Awards for their performances, he more than held his own in his mid-20s. He would later duel with Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men and Gene Hackman in The Firm.

One can only suppose that each of these partnerships and performances must have intimidated Cruise to some extent and may have even made him doubt his acting abilities. A young performer on the rise doesn’t often get the chance to compete against some of the giants he grew up watching and idolizing. But if he ever had hesitation or self-doubt, he kept it to himself and consistently gave powerful, nuanced performances.

Could Cruise win his first Academy Award with “Top Gun: Maverick”?

It’s easy to assume that no one anticipated Top Gun: Maverick would be as successful as it has been after decades of preparations for a sequel to Top Gun and multiple delays in the film’s release.

Regarding commercial performance, as well as review and popular reception, it dramatically defied and was above expectations. Many spectators simply didn’t know they wanted the movie. A few days ago, the movie garnered a Golden Globe nomination for Best Picture – Drama, marking yet another unexpected turning point in its incredible journey. There is something to be said for the awards circuit, which tends to focus on recognizing less mainstream filmmaking, to single out Tom Cruise’s most recent thrill ride, even though it’s not unheard of for crowd-pleasing blockbusters to be recognized in such a way (Avatar: The Way of Water also secured the same nomination).

Only time will tell if the Academy will follow suit in nominating Top Gun: Maverick and its recognizable actor for the top prize in film. Although it’s safe to assume that the movie will almost certainly receive nominations in the technical categories (sound, visual effects, editing, cinematography), it’s less likely that Cruise will receive a nomination for Best Actor following the HFPA’s recent rejection of him for the upcoming Golden Globes. But such a degree of acclaim would be a proper homage to the actor and his eagerly anticipated return to a cherished role. His portrayal in the movie, which is replete with respect for the past and sympathetic acknowledgment of the passage of time, substantially enhances Maverick’s storytelling effect and gives it an emotional core that is uncommon in action movies. If an actor winning his first Academy Award for a movie like Top Gun: Maverick seems unlikely, keep in mind that it was improbable before the movie’s May 27 release that it would go on to become one of the best-known movies of all time.
