The White Lotus Season 2 finale on Sunday night was an action-packed, though unimpressive, end to a season of deceit, deception, and the presence of excessive wealth. Writer/director Mike White had to wrap up the stories of a large cast of characters due to the unusually long run time of an hour and 17 minutes, making it uncertain which, if any, of them will feature in the upcoming season. The most terrifying journey belonged to Tanya’s helper Portia (Haley Lu Richardson), who barely made it to the closing scene at the Catania Airport.

Portia’s Real-Life Horror Movie

When Tanya tells Portia that she overheard Jack having sex with his “uncle” Quentin during their phone call, they begin piecing together a bigger scheme to kill her and Portia starts to fear. “I just have this incredibly weird sense that something horrible is going to happen,” she says to Tanya. Tanya and Portia’s reactions to this phone call mark a turning point in the show.

Tanya is likely to be one of the victims Daphne finds in the ocean, which is rather obvious given the revelation of the murder plan against her and the fact that she is the sole returning character from Season 1. In light of this, the viewer is left wondering if Portia will be one of the bodies as they have known since the first episode that numerous bodies are discovered.

Portia has no idea what will happen after this. She still doesn’t have her phone, and she has questions regarding Tanya’s location and Jack’s motivations. She is stranded with a man she hardly knows in a nation whose language she does not speak, without a cell phone to call for aid. She is living the woman’s worst nightmare.

As Jack’s true nature begins to surface, he becomes more and angrier with her, pleading with her to stop interrogating him and “let him do his job.” The rest of the episode is spent watching Portia’s life turn into a horror movie scenario, complete with the bad choices you’d anticipate from a character who’s about to die in a slasher film.

She has numerous opportunities to leave Jack, but she never does: while he is unconscious in the hotel, when he forgets his phone at the café, and when he gets out of the car to light a cigarette. She also makes the absurd choice to hold off on confronting Jack about his falsehoods and even directly asks him if she is being abducted – but only after they are both imprisoned inside a car.
