In an interview, Cardi B discusses why she decided not to enter “WAP” for the 2021 Grammys. She may have topped the charts with her No. 1 single, which was published in August 2020, and received five nominations for MTV Video Music Awards the following year. However, Cardi had no intention of submitting it to the Grammys, primarily because to the unfavorable comments.

What do you know? Cardi, 30, claimed this in a recent episode of Jason Lee’s REVOLT podcast. “I need to stop letting the internet dominate my life,” she said.

I was hesitant to submit ‘WAP’ because I was worried about what would happen if I succeeded or if I… What’s so weird, do you know? I’m now frightened of winning because of the internet.

When Cardi opted not to submit the song for a Recording Academy nomination, Lee said in her most recent interview that he “wanted to jump through the phone and yell at” the artist. “Because this song brought two superstars together, which I adored, “added said.

Following its release, the song—a duet with Megan Thee Stallion—sparked debate and swiftly came under fire from conservative commentators like Ben Shapiro and Candace Owens. When the song was eventually performed at the Grammys in 2021, Owens stated it was “a lesbian sex scene being replicated on television,” while Shapiro seemed to be making a mocking claim that “WAP” was “what feminists battled for” at the time.

Also in 2021, after endorsing two Democratic presidential candidates, Cardi spoke out about how conservatives reacted to her popular song, telling Apple Music’s Zane Lowe that “they were simply trying to figure out a way out to hate on me.”

She stated, alluding to right commentators on social media, “When ‘WAP’ came out, the people that were criticizing it the most, they were like, ‘This is so nasty, this is so creepy’ — I don’t even think it was religious people, it was actually a lot of Republicans.”

“I used to endorse Bernie [Sanders] and then Joe Biden, so they were just trying to figure a way out to pick on me,” she later added. “Like, ‘Oh Joe Biden is this the girl you were doing that interview with? The girl that’s talking about WAP? That’s what you want America to be influenced by?'”

“And it’s like bro, c’mon now,” Cardi said.

With reference to the double standard in the hip-hop genre, Cardi has previously defended the song as not being excessively explicit within the framework of the genre. Cardi once said on The Kyle and Jackie O Show, “The folks who the song bothers are usually conservatives or highly religious people, but my thing is I grew up listening to this type of music.” “Others might find it bizarre and filthy, but to me, you know what I mean? It almost seems incredibly normal.”

Since then, “WAP” has gone on to win numerous awards, including a People’s Choice Award, a BET Award, three BET Hip Hop Awards, and more. The song has received seven American platinum certifications as of March 2022.
