For Memorial Day weekend, Open Road has scheduled the action film Kandahar starring Gerard Butler. Ric Roman Waugh is the film’s director, working from a script he co-wrote with Mitchell LaFortune. The actor-director team, who previously collaborated on films including Greenland and Angel Has Fallen, is back together for this film.

In the film, Butler plays Tom Harris, an undercover CIA agent who gets lost in Afghanistan’s treacherous interior. When his plan is discovered, he must fight his way to an extraction location while dodging elite enemy forces and international spies. The Saudi Arabian province of AlUla served as the ideal backdrop for filming the dramatic new thriller.

LaFortune’s own personal experiences as a military intelligence officer working during the pandemonium of the Snowden revelations further distinguish the film from others in the genre. Given this firsthand knowledge, the movie will present a very distinctive viewpoint on the uproar that resulted from Edward Snowden’s intelligence leaks in 2013. Waugh earlier stated in an official statement, “With regard to the feature,

“What made Mitch LaFortune’s visceral script so compelling and unique for me is its authenticity and how he humanizes not just our heroes, but all the characters portrayed in a region that’s been locked in a perpetual cycle of violence.”

Along with Butler, the film also stars Navid Negahban from Homeland and Legion, Travis Fimmel from Vikings, and Bollywood actors Ali Fazal from Victoria and Abdul and Death on the Nile and Elnaaz Norouzi from Netflix’s Sacred Games. Butler is now enjoying popularity after the release of Jean-François Richet’s latest action movie, Plane. The film is a truly original entry in the action thriller genre thanks to the abilities both in front of and behind the camera and a sensitive yet action-packed script.

The action thriller’s U.S. rights were purchased by Open Road Films last year in an eye-catching eight-figure payment. At the time, Open Road Films’ Tom Ortenberg remarked of Kandahar, “Kandahar is an exhilarating journey designed for the big screen. With this heart-pounding actioner, Gerry, Ric, the G-BASE crew, and Thunder Road have excelled themselves, and our team is excited to present it to audiences everywhere. Basil Iwanyk, Brendon Boyea, Erica Lee, Butler, Alan Siegel, Christian Mercuri, Ali Jaafar, and Scott LaStaiti are the producers of the movie. On May 26, Memorial Day weekend, Kandahar will have its theatrical release.
