Gwen Shamblin’s controversial story gets new treatment in Lifetime’s Gwen Shamblin trailer
The Gwen Shamblin: Starving For Salvation teaser stars the Dirty Dancing actress as the self-described spiritual diet teacher Gwen Shamblin.
The film chronicles the life of Gwen, the pioneer of the Weigh Down Workshop and the Tennessee-based Remnant Fellowship Church who is equally well-known for her eye-catching haircut as she is for her contentious theological beliefs—”The taller the hair, the closer to God,” she declares in the trailer.
“The demon isn’t food,” Jennifer’s Gwen says in the trailer. “It’s sin.”
A Christian diet regimen called The Weigh down Workshop claimed that prayer and a positive relationship with a higher power were directly related to weight loss.
“Your stomach doesn’t need food,” Gwen says. “It needs God.”
And as the trailer demonstrates, Gwen’s idea brought her hordes of dedicated fans. We’ll follow you wherever you take us, one says to Gwen. Gwen attracted hordes of dedicated fans with her idea. We’ll follow you wherever you take us, one says to Gwen.
“As her church grew across the nation, so did her iron-fisted grip as its leader,” the network says, “accumulating power and money while creating a larger-than-life public persona with dramatically teased and towering hair.”
The HBO Max documentary series The Way Down God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin from 2021 details Gwen’s story, which gets darker as she rises in the organization’s hierarchy.
“At the peak of her power and influence, Gwen demanded that church members alienate themselves from anyone who was not a member,” the network continues, “banished those that became overweight, threatened legal action against dissenters, and advocated for strict punishment of those who failed to follow church tenets.”
Gwen’s story ultimately came to a shocking conclusion when her husband Joe Lara’s aircraft crashed in May 2021, killing Joe, Gwen, their son-in-law, and four other Remnant Fellowship Church leaders. Lifetime will debut Gwen Shamblin: Starving For Salvation on February 4 at 8 p.m.
