Lisa Vanderpump appeared to react quickly to Lisa Rinna’s announcement that she would be leaving the show. Just hours after Rinna, 59, said she wouldn’t be returning to the Bravo series, Vanderpump, 62, tweeted, “Ding dong.” The remark seemed to be a reference to the song “Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead” from the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz.

The two women have engaged in a number of on-air arguments over the years, and in 2019 the Veronica Mars star accused the Englishwoman of trying to cash in on the Real Housewife’s success by creating a new program centered on her dog rescue, Vanderpump Dogs.

When Vanderpump Dogs staff member John Blizzard told co-stars Kyle Richards and Teddi Mellencamp that Dorit Kemsley’s former adopted puppy wound up in a kill shelter, the scandal first broke out during season 9 of the reality series. The restaurant owner was caught in the thick of the controversy.

Several sources informed the media in March 2019 that a spinoff centered around the company was in fact “in the works,” upsetting some of the RHOBH co-stars, notably Rinna, who vented her annoyance on social media.

“I’m a hustler. I make no bones about that. I think you get paid for what you do. So my feeling is, if we indeed are servicing a spinoff, we should be paid for it,” the former soap star wrote via her Instagram Stories at the time. “I am so happy for all of us to use this platform for makeup lines, bathing suit lines, network TV shows, restaurants, [charities], clothing lines, fitness empires, you name it. I support these women, 100 percent.”

The former star of Days of Our Lives also stated that she anticipated receiving payment for her work on the film.

“But if you are going to use our services without telling us — that we are playing out a storyline to launch a pilot for a new show and you don’t compensate us extra for that — yeah, I’m a hustler. I get paid for what I do,” she said. “So, if this indeed becomes another show, my lawyer will be calling.”

Rinna gave her fans an update when Peacock announced the new reality show would be renewed in July 2020.

“I was right the entire time. To my face, everyone lied about this, and yet here we are. So maybe this time you’ll trust me,” she wrote in the description of an Instagram Story that same month.

In the end, Vanderpump left RHOBH midway through season 9 due to the controversy.

“I left because I was very, very, very unhappy and I didn’t appreciate being called a liar,” she told the news during an episode of the “Getting Real with the Housewives” podcast. “To accuse me of selling a story, when you never get stories to come out of my restaurants, you know, so it was such an insult to me. It was about my heart, it was about the Vanderpump Dog Foundation, which was something that was born out of complete compassion and my passion project. I just thought, ‘I’m done with it.’”

The RHOBH’s Rinna, who debuted in season 5, gave an explanation of why she thought it was time for her to go.

“This is the longest job I have held in my 35-year career and I am grateful to everyone at Bravo and all those involved in the series,” she told the news in a statement. “It has been a fun 8-year run and I am excited for what is to come!’”

According to the former soap star’s representative, Rinna took the time to consider her options and her obligations as a company owner because her contract “ended at the end of last season,” and she ultimately “mutually determined” with Bravo that she would not return to the series.
