“Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” claws past $200 million at the worldwide box office
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, DreamWorks continues to make money as the year progresses. The well-liked sequel has now made over $200 million worldwide in its first week of 2023, making it one of the animation studio’s largest movies to date and one of the best-performing animated movies ever since the pandemic started. The film benefited from a strong overall hold and saw a modest decline in performance from last week thanks to a number of variables, including the fact that last weekend’s box office was hampered amidst New Year’s celebrations and school vacations were still in effect.
The Last Wish over the weekend became one of just ten animated movies in the pandemic era to surpass the $100 million mark internationally. As of right now, it has earned $112 million internationally, surpassing Disney’s Lightyear in the process. This places the movie third in the DreamWorks box office history, behind The Bad Guys and The Croods: A New Age, and as the eighth-highest-grossing MPA cartoon during the epidemic era. The Last Wish is the only movie ahead of those two in the global box office, but with $250.4 and $216 million in revenue, respectively, neither can catch Antonio Banderas’s orange cat.
The Last Wish also received a financial boost this weekend with the addition of six more markets, including Brazil, Korea, and Poland. Without taking China into account, it is already performing better than the hugely successful Sing 2 and has even surpassed the lifetime earnings of the Illumination sequel in 12 markets. For DreamWorks, it’s a testament to the movie’s fantastic word-of-mouth reviews it’s garnered since its premiere as well as the franchise’s ongoing popularity. The marketing strategy undoubtedly worked wonders, and one stop on Sean Evans’ well-known YouTube interview program Hot Ones was no exception.
After years of daring deeds and swashbuckling, Puss in Boots makes his final wish in The Last Wish. With the aid of both old and new companions, he embarks on the journey of a lifetime to uncover the titular Last Wish in an effort to defeat death and win back the lives he lost. Salma Hayek, reprising her role as Kitty Softpaws, comes back with Antonio Banderas, while newcomer Harvey Guillén co-stars as the upbeat dog Perrito. Florence Pugh, Olivia Colman, Ray Winstone, Samson Kayo, John Mulaney, Wagner Moura, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Anthony Mendez round out the ensemble group.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Puss in Boots’ comeback received an almost unanimous 96% score from critics and 93% from viewers. In his Collider review, Nate Richard gave the movie an A-, writing “It’s not only one of the year’s best-animated movies; it’s also one of DreamWorks’ best, and it will appeal to viewers of all ages. It never comes off as talking down to anyone and is equally exciting, humorous, and genuine.”
