‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’, the second in a string of Shrek spinoff movies starring Antonio Banderas as the lead feline, has added $16 million to its worldwide box office earnings.

This pushes the movie’s overall box office profits above the $50 million level when combined with the $11 million from the domestic box office made over the three-day weekend.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is expected to make somewhat more than Ferdinand from Blue Sky Animation and slightly less than Sing from Illumination with openings in 28 more locations this week.

The projected 4-day revenues indicate that, with the long holiday weekend still in full force, the movie will gross more than $57 million worldwide.

The movie has already established its popularity with viewers, earning an A on CinemaScore. Nate Richard, a reviewer for Collider, rated the movie an A- and referred to it as “the hero that DreamWorks Animation has needed all along.”

He continued, saying “The film is surprisingly much more ambitious and mature than one might expect, it goes beyond the messages you might expect from your average family movie and decides to dig deep into themes of mortality and confronting death. The stakes are actually felt and there are moments in the film’s climax that are effectively tense.”

Salma Hayek reprises her 2011 role as Kitty Softpaws in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which also stars Antonio Banderas, who first played the character in 2004’s Shrek 2.

Harvey Guillen as Perro, Florence Pugh as Goldilocks, John Mulaney as Jack Horner, Samson Kayo as Baby Bear, Da’Vine Joy Randolph as Mama Luna, Wagner Moura as the Big Bad Wolf, Ray Winstone as Papa Bear, and Anthony Mendez are among the new cast members this time around.
