The Texas Chain Saw-Massacre is one of the most celebrated horror films in history

The slasher film, which Tobe Hooper directed, was groundbreaking in many respects and popularized the terrifying Leatherface. In 2023, Dark Sky Films will release the movie in 4K Blu-ray after over 50 years of terror. However, Second Sight has already revealed a new 4K box set release for the venerable grindhouse slasher that will arrive in April, so they aren’t the only chainsaw game in town.

The limited-edition box set is packed to the gills with bonus content, including a few brand-new additions that will excite any fan of vintage horror. Additional restoration work, new audio commentary by Amanda Reyes and Bill Ackerman, UHD presented in Dolby Vision HDR, and a feature-length documentary created by Second Sight titled The Legacy of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre are among the new features. There are also all the bonus materials that were made available with the movie’s earlier physical media releases. Various audio commentary, making-of documentaries, outtakes, and deleted scenes are included in this.

The box set itself, however, is the key selling feature of this specific offering. Texas Chain Saw, like all previous Second Sight releases, comes in a gorgeous hard box case with the original UK VHS artwork. There are nine collectible art cards (three of which are only available at Second Sight’s store) and a sizable 190-page hardback book with more than a dozen new essays within. Amazing work has always been done by Second Sight.

Examples of their box sets are Robert Eggers’ The Witch and Drive. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, on the other hand, is a different species of animal. It laid the groundwork for what horror fans now recognize as the traditional slasher subgenre. Leatherface gave dread a new terrible moniker before films like Halloween, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Scream. Texas Chain Saw is still one of the scariest movies ever made, thanks to Hooper’s masterful direction and Daniel Pearl’s spine-chilling photography.

Other contemporary grindhouse slashers like Ti West’s X and Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses continue to honor its history. It’s wonderful to see Hooper’s groundbreaking horror masterpiece receive the recognition it merits this year with not one but two excellent physical 4K editions.
