In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Dominique Thorne made her MCU debut on screen as Riri Williams before landing the lead in the new Ironheart Disney+ series from Marvel Studios. But if things had worked out differently, we may have seen the actress a lot sooner and in a completely different role. When Thorne was trying out for the part of Shuri, T’Challa’s younger sister in the 2018 film Black Panther, she channelled the late great Chadwick Boseman.

The new test footage is included in the Disney+ program Marvel Studios Assembled: The Making of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The 27-second test tape features Boseman and Thorne acting out a scenario as two siblings, with Boseman giving the actress a warm smile in the process. MediaBRMN posted the short clip to Twitter. After Boseman’s unexpected passing in 2020, Letitia Wright was cast in the Shuri role and later assumed the character of Black Panther in Wakanda Forever.

Producer Nate Moore supplied a narration for the test film, saying that although though Thorne didn’t end up playing Shuri, they recalled her performance and made her the “first and only call” when they decided to introduce Riri Williams in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Although coverage of Thorne’s screen test for the role of Shuri has previously occurred, this is the first time that real footage from the audition has been made accessible.

The Prognosis for Ironheart

Thorne will next be seen in the new Disney+ series with the same name as her superhero alter-ego, Ironheart, as Riri Williams, after making her acting debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The character, a 15-year-old genius who can create her own Iron Man suit and utilise it to become the eponymous hero, made her debut in 2016 as part of the Invincible Iron Man books.

Thorne, who is a part of Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is the cast’s current front-runner. Other currently confirmed actors in the cast include Anthony Ramos (In the Heights), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story), Manny Montana (Good Girls), Lyric Ross (This Is Us), Rashida “Sheedz” Olayiwola, Harper Anthony, Zoe Terakes, Regan Aliyah (XO, Kitty), and The showrunner and co-writer of the series will be Eve Ewing and Chinaka Hodge (Snowpiercer). With Proximity, the production business of Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever filmmaker Ryan Coogler, serving as one of the production companies, Sam Bailey and Angela Barnes will direct the six episodes.
