Russell Crowe is first seen in the “Pope’s Exorcist” featurette as a priest
Movie theatres have already been terrified by a few 2023 releases, including M3GAN, Infinity Pool, and Knock at the Lodge. While the genre will be concentrating on the comeback of legendary series like Scream and Evil Dead in the coming months, there is one original supernatural horror picture coming out in April that has caught the curiosity of many genre aficionados.
That would be Russell Crowe’s performance in The Pope’s Exorcist. Crowe portrays actual priest Father Gabriele Amorth in the movie, who served as the Vatican’s Chief Exorcist. His demonic case files will serve as the basis for the narrative. In a brand-new featurette for The Pope’s Exorcist that has just been released in advance of the movie’s first trailer, Crowe discusses the terror that forms the core of Father Amorth’s tale.
The one-minute short focuses on Amorth’s involvement with the Catholic Church and how, for more than 35 years, he carried out thousands of exorcisms. Because to the nature of his activity combating this form of unsubstantiated demonic evil, he became a contentious figure. The renowned demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren, who were well-known for their own collection of contentious techniques and theories, were in practice at the same time as him. Father Amorth documented his instances, much like the Warrens did, and that is how this movie came to be.
The role the Church played in the development of evil is the final point this featurette makes a reference to. The presence of demons, the definition of evil, and ideas like damnation have always been controversial within the Catholic Church. Exorcists may or may not still exist within the Church, but The Pope’s Exorcist seeks to explore the most compelling facets of the Catholic religion’s view on demonic possession while also further exposing their terrifying real-world dark secrets. While the horrors of the Church today often result from self-inflicted wounds and revelations.
The Evolution of Paranormal Horror
Since its inception, the supernatural subgenre has been linked to horror. Despite this, the genre didn’t fully take off in movies until Rosemary’s Baby in 1968. This spooky classic sparked a wave of “Satanic Panic” movies that would dominate the genre in the 1970s and 1980s. The list includes The Amityville Horror, Poltergeist, Carrie, The Omen, and many others. The Exorcist, which came out in 1973, was the movie that permanently altered the genre.
One of the scariest movies ever created is the William Friedkin masterpiece, which was adapted from the same-named William Peter Blatty book. Based on the Warrens’ own case files, The Conjuring franchise and underappreciated treasures like the successful Paramount+ series Evil continue to impact how we perceive exorcists today.
That horror masterpiece appears to have had a big influence on The Pope’s Exorcist. The dark, gothic aesthetic in the early clips from this new featurette seems to have been lifted directly from The Exorcist. In spite of the fact that there have been numerous exorcism movies in the 50 years since the premiere of The Exorcist, that is unquestionably not a bad thing. Also, this is a movie to keep an eye out for because Julius Avery’s earlier horror film Overlords was a gem of the genre that went unnoticed.
