According to Sarah Michelle Gellar, the live-action Scooby-Doo movie from 2002 had a “steamy” deleted sequence.

The 45-year-old Wolf Pack actress answered a question from viewers who inquired about a rumored “relationship on the side” between Daphne (Gellar) and Velma (Linda Cardellini) in the James Gunn-written Scooby-Doo movie during her appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen with Rosie Perez Thursday night.

“I don’t know about a relationship on the side,” Gellar said, “but there was a steamy— I mean, I said it was steamy, but they probably didn’t think it was, hence it was cut….”

Gellar said that there was a kissing scene between the two characters after host Andy Cohen pressed the actress to elaborate: “Yes, the kiss was cut. The scene that was omitted was a real kiss between Daphne and Velma. The world seems to want to see it, but I’m not sure where it is.”

Based on the enduring animated series of the same name, Scooby-Doo was first marketed as a PG-rated comedy. However, screenwriter Gunn, who is also co-CEO of DC Studios, revealed in a 2017 Facebook post that his original edit of the film was rated R. (Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed from 2004 was likewise rated PG.)

On WWHL Thursday, Gellar discussed further elements of the movie that were deleted from the “family-friendly” version, such as a moment between Daphne and Fred (Gellar’s real-life husband Freddie Prinze Jr.), which suggested Fred was gay.

“There was a great line, too, where I’ll never forget, we’re having a fight, Daphne and Fred, and then I yell at him, ‘And that ascot makes you look gay!’ and I slam the door. They cut that too,” Gellar shared. “I think it was the reason I actually signed on to the movie.”

“I know everyone’s thought for a long time… there were always implications about Fred being interested in both parties. They all got cut,” she added. “[The movie] was less family-friendly, to begin with.”

Gellar revealed to SciFi Wire in 2002 that the kiss scene that was cut contained a sequence in which the Mystery Gang switched bodies.

Velma and Daphne initially struggled to reunite their spirits in the woods during the soul-swapping sequence, according to Gellar at the time. Kissing was the solution they discovered, and the souls returned to their original alignment.
