Gloria Gaynor recalls the precise moment when she chose to end her 26-year union with her manager, Linwood Simon. The “I Will Survive” singer claims that Simon showed no interest in driving her to the hospital when she experienced a crippling migraine headache for the second time in a short period of time while she was out of the house.

“OK, I’m done,” I replied. You don’t care about me at all, and I’m done. I’d have to be completely unconscious not to understand it. She discloses. “When she stated it was disregarded, my pal nailed it. When you actually go through it, you cannot imagine how awful that can be. It was incredibly liberating to leave him.”

Gaynor, 79, attributes her 2004 decision to finally file for divorce from Simon to a religious epiphany she experienced in the 1980s.

The Grammy-winning artist tells that she discovered the kind of security she’d long wanted after growing up with an absent father when she married Linwood, her longtime (and now former) manager, in 1979. Gaynor acknowledges that despite their partnership having “beautiful times,” it was never balanced. He did not want children, but she “swallowed anything he said and did whatever he said and simply let him have his way” despite their differences in desire to have children.

Now that the pain of her breakup is behind her, Gaynor claims to be “quite happy” these days. While she is comfortable with being single, she wouldn’t say no if the right person were to come along.

She declares, “I firmly believe in love. “I genuinely doubt that it is in the cards for me because I am now uninterested. If it occurs, it occurs. I’m fine if not. It’s a fantastic location to be.”

Gaynor will celebrate her 80th birthday in September and the 45th anniversary of “I Will Survive” in the upcoming year, in addition to the debut of a long-awaited documentary and a new fragrance. (The song and music video were both made in celebration of International Women’s Day.)

Throughout the past year, the timeless disco hymn has amply proven its enduring appeal. It was initially the B-side to her single “Substitute,” but radio exposure helped it become a massive smash anyway. Lizzo sang it on stage with Harry Styles in April as part of his headlining Coachella performance, while Miley Cyrus incorporates it into her current number-one single, “Flowers.”

“I have not just survived, I have thrived,” Gaynor says. I genuinely believe that the song I utilize every time I’m going through something has a lot to do with it.
