For DC Studios and Warner Bros., the upcoming Superman: Legacy will be helmed by James Gunn. Earlier, it had been revealed that the Man of Steel movie’s script would be written by the Suicide Squad director. But now Gunn will also direct the eagerly anticipated movie from behind the camera. There hasn’t yet been a choice made for the actor who will don the cape and tights. It was announced that Henry Cavill would not reprise his role as the renowned superhero as the studio underwent a significant restructuring. Instead, the movie will center on a younger Clark Kent who will attempt to combine his life as a superhero and as a reporter for the Daily Planet.

Superman: Legacy’s director, Gunn, was previously alluded to in an interview by veteran DC Comics writer Tom King. The Guardians of the Galaxy director has been very passionate about his script for the next Superman movie, so today’s official confirmation shouldn’t be too shocking. King penned the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book miniseries, which will serve as the model for a Kal-cousin-centered El’s movie set in the same universe as Gunn’s. In that scenario, Supergirl, who grew up witnessing the horrors of war tearing the galaxy apart, has a totally different viewpoint on mankind than Clark does.

In addition to learning how to balance his two jobs, the movie will show Clark Kent examining how his roots as a Kansas farmer and a Kryptonian son have shaped who he is and what that means for his future. The protagonist will need to accept who his parents are and what he can do to write his own story, similar to other stories by James Gunn like Peacemaker. The film will be released on July 11, 2025, which also happens to be Gunn’s late father’s birthday.

The Prospects for DC Are Good

The main concern about whether or not Gunn would helm Legacy stemmed from the fact that he is quite busy in his role as co-president of DC Studios with Peter Safran. The duo first revealed a portion of the new DC Universe’s first chapter in January, which included theatrical releases, streaming television programs, animated series, and video games. The “Gods and Monsters” slate, which includes Superman: Legacy as only the first installment of a franchise that will also feature characters like Swamp Thing and The Authority, will provide a tonne of content over the course of this decade’s second half.
