Even though Taika Waititi has finished working on the God of Thunder, he still hopes to use his talents in a galaxy far, far away. Fans might find solace in the fact that the filmmaker of Thor: Ragnarok is still hard at work on his own Star Wars movie, and not just as a director, after an evening of news that saw two significant Star Wars projects canceled.

According to Variety, Waititi is still working on his own Star Wars film and is aiming to play a prominent role in front of the camera, similar to his performance as a fictitious Adolf Hitler in his Oscar-winning movie Jojo Rabbit from 2019. This is in contrast to the projects that Patty Jenkins and Kevin Feige shelved. Waititi is also no stranger to Star Wars, having worked on The Mandalorian with Jon Favreau and David Filoni behind the camera and providing the robotic character IG-11’s voice, most recently in last week’s Season 3 premiere.

In an earlier interview with Total Film, Waititi stated that he would prefer not to helm a movie with established characters and storylines.

“Look, I believe that in order for the Star Wars universe to grow, it must grow. Doing a movie where everyone is like, “Oh wonderful, well that’s the plans to the Millenium Falcon, ah that’s Chewbacca’s grandmother,” doesn’t seem like much use to me in the Star Wars universe. That’s fantastic that it all sits on its own, but I’d like to take something fresh, make some new characters, and just broaden the world because otherwise, it feels like a pretty short story.”

The “Star Wars” Film Series Will Return to the Big Screen

The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, as well as planned series like The Acolyte and limited series in the style of Obi-Wan Kenobi, are just a few examples of how the Star Wars franchise has prioritized television in recent years. Despite this, Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm, has previously emphasized that the company’s top priority remains to produce feature films.

“As the story comes to an end, there is a tonne of fantastic, exciting work going on in the television world that reveals a lot about where we’re going. Kennedy stated, “We want to be extremely deliberate about it, and we have fantastic people working on the next Star Wars movie to make sure it comes out with a “bang.”

The weekend of April 7 is when London hosts Star Wars Celebration, the annual conference for the series. At the event, Lucasfilm is anticipated to make significant announcements about the future of Star Wars on the big screen as well as anticipated updates for at least four Disney+ programs, including the highly anticipated final season of the critically acclaimed Andor.
