On Thursday, it was announced that Trevor Noah had been selected to receive the prestigious Dutch Erasmus Prize.

The comedian and former host of The Daily Show is the first humorist since Charlie Chaplin in 1965 to receive the award.

Desiderius Erasmus, a Dutch philosopher and humanist scholar who lived from 1466 to 1536, is the name of the prestigious award.

The Praemium Erasmianum Foundation stated in a statement that Noah, who is 39 years old, would be receiving the award “for his inspired contribution to the theme ‘In Praise of Folly,’ named after Erasmus’s most famous book, which is filled with humor, social criticism and political satire.”

“With his sharp-minded, mocking yet inclusive political comedy, Noah, in the eyes of the jury, upholds the ‘Erasmian Spirit,’” the foundation added.

After seven years on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, Noah announced his departure last year.

In the meantime, Noah will be honored at a ceremony before the end of the year.
