Combat Scalp Sensitivity And Dryness As We Age

Just like our faces, the skin on our scalps needs more specialized care as we age. Our scalps age almost six times faster than the skin on our faces, and with that comes its own set of complications.

As our scalps age, the skin cells begin to regenerate more slowly, and the sebum produced is reduced as a result. This is due to the loss of natural oils.

The skin on our heads can seem baron and devoid of any indication of life. Shampoos and hair products with sulfates add to this issue. Fortunately, these issues can be dealt with.

Harsh chemicals like sulfates, parabens, phthalates or sodium chloride can cause irreparable damage to the skin. This may lead to redness of the scalp and cause irritation.

Instead we should be using products with natural ingredients and essential or plant-derived oils. Adding fortifying serum to the hair care routine may help restore lost nutrients and protect the hair shafts.

Nourishing ingredients like kelp extract and ginger help increase blood flow and support new growth. These can either be massaged onto the scalp or an applicator can be used to boost the stimulation.

Itchy Scalp

Scalp sensitivity can cause itchiness which can be a side-effect of the aforementioned factors.

Easier said than done, but one should resist scratching an itchy scalp. If not, it will make the problem worse by causing further damage to the scalp.

One should be sure to steer clear of moisture-stripping shampoos, and Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS). They can break down the skins protective barrier and cause greater loss of moisture in the skin.

One should use scalp cleansers or specialized dandruff shampoos with naturally hydrating ingredients to combat flaky skin issues.

Scalp sensitivity causes dryness or itchiness which can be infuriating if it is not resolved.
