Gangster Vikas Dubey, who was involved in dozens of crimes in India and the killing of eight policemen last week, was allegedly killed in encounter while trying to escape.

In the Indian city of Kanpur, a clash between police and gang war took place on July 3 in which eight policemen were killed while gangster Vikas Dubey escaped after the incident and was arrested by the police from Madhya Pradesh a week later.

According to Indian media, accused Vikas Dubey was killed in a police encounter while trying to escape on Friday morning.

Police said that Vikas Dubey was being shifted from Madhya Pradesh to Kanpur when a police vehicle met with an accident and the vehicle overturned, injuring the policeman and the accused.

Police further stated that after the accident, the accused snatched his official weapon from the injured officer and tried to flee to a nearby area, whereupon the police surrounded him and asked him to surrender, but the accused opened fire on the police. The accused was injured in the retaliatory firing.

Police officials said that Vikas Dubey was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition where he died.

According to Indian media, Vikas Dubey was arrested in a dramatic manner from a temple in Madhya Pradesh yesterday where he was identified by the security guard of the temple while confronting the guard. Reportedly, the police arrested him.

UP police officials say several of the accused’s accomplices have been arrested and killed, prompting him to try to save himself, while a few hours before Vikas Dubey’s arrest, two more of his accomplices were in Uttar Pradesh were killed in the encounter.
