Myanmar witnessed General Election 2020. The ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party has won the majority of the seats in the parliament to form the next government.

According to the latest election updates, the NLD has won 346 seats, more than the 322 seats needed to form the next government.

It comes days after the party claimed victory earlier.

However, the military-backed opposition has asked for a re-run of the election.

Leaders of countries including India and Japan have congratulated the NLD on their win.

About elections

Myanmar voters voted for the general election on Sunday. Vote counting is still underway and officials have yet to declare the official result. Over 64 out of 416 seats are still undeclared.

The NLD claimed triumph soon after Sunday’s election, claiming it was expecting to win more than enough seats to form a government.

Opposition claimed re-run

The opposition has accused the government of irregularities in the election.

The Union Solidarity and Development Party said in a press conference on Monday that it did not recognize the results. It called on authorities to have an “election that is free, fair, unbiased and free from unfair campaigning”.

According to the international news agency, the army had also said that early voting showed “errors of neglect” in voter lists and a “widespread violation of laws and procedures”.

However, Myanmar’s Union Election Commission mentioned in a press conference that the election was “done fairly and free”, adding it could not have been “more transparent”.
