The UAE drivering license is valid in 50 countries of the world, holders of driving licenses issued by the UAE allowed to drive and rent a car in those countries.

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Algeria, Jordan, Morocco, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan, USA, UK, Ireland, Singapore, Canada, Poland, Turkey, China, Finland, Turkey, Poland, New Zealand, and others are among the countries where the driving license will be valid.

A list of these countries can be found on the website of the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, each country has a specific period of use of the driving license.

In order to get a driving license in the United Arab Emirates, the person concerned has to take 40 classes and then the license is issued to those who pass the test.

To apply for the driving license you should be a citizen or resident of the United Arab Emirates, above the age of 18 (for a light motor vehicle license, motorcycles and heavy vehicles have separate set of requirements) and should be medically fit (entails an eye test).

What Document you will require to open a traffic file include

  • Copy of passport and residence visa page
  • Copy and original Emirates ID card

  • No objection letter from the sponsor (if required by the related traffic department).
  • For Emiratis, only an Emirates ID is required. For expats, Emirates ID, and resident

A no-objection certificate from the sponsor is required for certain professions, details of which are provided at each driving center or can be found on the Roads and Transport Authority’s (RTA) website. The RTA has now started allowing sponsors to issue the NOCs online, making the entire process a lot quicker and easier.

Eye tests check an applicant for visual activity and color blindness. Most optics shops across the country provide eye test reports for applying for a driving license. Head over to a shop near you and simply ask them if they offer the service. Prices can vary based on the emirate you are applying from.

You Can Convert Your Foreign Driving Licence Into A UAE One

Those who have a foreign license and are on the list of accredited countries need driving licenses to be translated into Arabic. The fees for the conversion are Dh410 in Dubai and Dh380 in Abu Dhabi (the latter includes eye test fees).

And those whose driving licenses are not from accredited countries are given one chance to undergo a knowledge test and road test and if they pass on the first, they will receive a UAE license. If they fail, however, they will have to undergo at least eight lessons (advanced level training) at a driving school and then come back for the test.
