Massive cargo sinks in the Persian Gulf off Iran with transporting cars

According to the authorities, a big cargo ship with transporting cars sank in stormy waves in the Persian Gulf on Thursday.

The Al Salmy 6, a vessel registered in the United Arab Emirates, sank off Iran’s southern coast with 30 crew members on board. Capt. Nizar Qaddoura of the Dubai-based Salem Al Makrani Cargo firm reported that Iranian rescue teams saved 16 of the crew and that another 11 survivors boarded life rafts.

A nearby tanker rescued another person from the turbulent waves, but two crew members remained at sea. Rescue efforts were started, but inclement weather delayed them.

Iran’s Ports & Maritime Organization tells about the size of a cargo ship, it is longer than a soccer field, capsized 30 kilometres off the coast of Asaluyeh.

The ship, which had left Dubai just days earlier, was photographed tilting drastically onto its side at a perilous angle before going entirely submerged. Nationals from Sudan, India, Pakistan, Uganda, Tanzania, and Ethiopia make up the crew, according to Qaddoura.

The Persian Gulf was hit by severe weather on Wednesday, with wind gusts surpassing 40 mph and high seas. Iran’s Meteorological Organization issued a “red notice” earlier this week, advising that maritime activities could be harmed through Saturday.
