Beijing: During a phone chat with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on Wednesday, Chinese State Councilor and Minister of National Defense Wei Fenghe warned the US not to underestimate China’s resolve.

The two defence ministers also discussed maritime and air security, as well as the situation in Ukraine. According to Xinhua, Mr Wei said China and the US should seriously implement the two leaders’ agreement.

Mr. Wei said China hoped to establish sound and stable major-country ties with the US while defending its national interests and dignity.

Mr. Wei warned the US about China’s commitment and capability.

“The two militaries should enhance mutual trust, strengthen dialogue and exchanges, manage risks and crises, and carry out practical cooperation,” he said.

Mr. Wei stated that the “Chinese military will forcefully preserve national sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity” if the Taiwan issue is not properly addressed.

According to Xinhua, US Defense Secretary Ashton Austin stated that the US will increase military exchanges and cooperation with China. He said both sides should manage rivalry and danger responsibly, as well as the challenges facing their forces.

“We addressed US-PRC defence relations, regional security challenges, and Russia’s aggressive invasion of Ukraine,” Secretay Austin stated.

The call followed a video discussion between Xi Jinping and Joe Biden on March 18.

According to US State Department spokesman Ned Price, the US will continue to closely monitor China’s support for Russia in Ukraine.

At a press briefing, Mr. Price said, “We’re going to continue to keep a careful eye on the level of support the PRC (People’s Republic of China) exhibits towards Russia.”

Mr. Price warned that providing arms or supplies to Russia for its campaign in Ukraine or assisting Moscow in evading Western sanctions would have serious consequences for China.
