Greece has seized a Russian tanker

Athens: The Greek coast guard said on Tuesday that they had taken a Russian oil ship off the island of Evia as part of EU sanctions against Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine.

Russia-flagged ships were prohibited from EU ports earlier this month, with certain exceptions, when the 27-nation bloc enacted fresh broad sanctions against Russia.

At Karystos, on the southern coast of Evia, close to the Greek mainland near Athens, authorities seized the Russian-flagged Pegas, which was crewed by 19 Russians.

According to a shipping ministry spokesperson, “It has been seized as part of EU sanctions.” According to a coastguard spokesman, the ship’s oil cargo was not seized.

The Pegas has previously reported an issue with its engine. The Athens News Agency stated that rough seas forced it to moor near Karystos, where it was confiscated.
