Brooklyn, New York: A huge manhunt was underway in New York City on Tuesday in search of a man who opened fire on terrified subway passengers while wearing a gas mask and donning a gas mask before detonating two smoke bombs.

A motive for the event in Brooklyn has not yet been established, according to police, and the investigation is not being treated as terrorism at this time. There were no life-threatening injuries.

Commissioner Keechan Sewell of the New York City police department said in a press conference that the alleged gunman put on a gas mask when he arrived at the station.

The gunman “opened two canisters that dispensed smoke throughout the subway car,” Sewell said. “He then shot multiple passengers as the train pulled into the 36th Street station.”

“We are truly fortunate this was not significantly worse than it is,” Sewell said

Shooter fired 33 rounds, NYPD Chief of Staff James Essig stated. A Glock 17 nine-millimeter handgun, three more ammunition magazines, and a hatchet were found at the scene by police after the investigation.

Described as a “dark-skinned male” in an orange vest and grey hooded sweatshirt, the “person of interest” was identified by Sewell.

She went on to say that no one was in custody.

Just before 8:30 a.m., police received a call reporting a shooting (1230 GMT).

As the train approached the 36th Street stop, passengers raced out the doors, some of them appeared to be hurt, according to footage verified by social media.

It was Yav Montano’s account on CNN that he was in the car when it started filling with smoke and shots were fired.

“In the moment, I did not think that it was a shooting because it sounded like fireworks,” he said. “It just sounded like a bunch of scattered popping.”

According to Montano, there were 40 to 50 individuals in the car at the moment and a stampede began at the front — but the following car’s door was closed.

“There were people in that other car that saw what was happening. And they tried to open the door, but they couldn’t,” he said.

 ‘A lot of blood’

Some people were wearing masks and others were putting their clothes over their mouths to protect themselves from the smoky fumes.

“There were some people whose clothes, whose pants were covered in blood,” Montano said, adding that he could not tell who was injured. “All I know is I saw, like, a lot of blood.”

The doors opened as soon as the train arrived at the station.

“People filed out, people forgot bags and shoes, and they just left everything to just get out of there as soon as possible,” Montano said.

Passengers care to injured victims on a smokey platform, as subway officials guide terrified passengers, some of whom are still clutching their coffee cups.

When the chaos broke out on the platform, Sam Carmano was aboard a subway train that was arriving from the opposite direction.

“My subway door opened into just like calamity and then it was people, just running to get away from whatever was happening, and then it was smoke and blood and people screaming,” he said.

While visiting Iowa, Vice President Joe Biden spoke about the tragedy and thanked the first responders and citizens who “didn’t hesitate to help their fellow passengers.” He also stated his staff was in constant communication with New York officials.

“We’re not letting up until we find the perpetrator,” Biden vowed.

Approximately 40,000 people die each year in the United States due to firearms-related incidents, including suicides, according to the Gun Violence Archive website, which tracks mass shootings.
