This week, Finland and Sweden made significant steps toward becoming NATO’s newest members, as Russia’s war in Ukraine continues to worry Europeans. Sanna Marin, the Finnish prime minister, said on Wednesday that her nation, which shares a 1,300-kilometer border with Russia, will decide whether to seek to join the alliance “very quickly, in weeks, not months.” Magdalena Andersson, Sweden’s equivalent, adding that there was “no purpose” in postponing an assessment of whether Sweden should seek for NATO membership. Both nations are fully aware of the threat Russia poses to non-NATO members, particularly after a Kremlin official warned Finland and Sweden with “military repercussions” if they attempted to join the alliance.

Russia’s assertiveness has many worried that the world is on the verge of a nuclear war between two nuclear powers.

Three NATO countries have nuclear weapons: the United States, the United Kingdom, and France.

The United States has 5,550 nuclear weapons, 1,389 of which are operational, 2,361 are available, and 1,800 have been decommissioned.

Meanwhile, France possesses 290 operational nuclear weapons, while the United Kingdom has 225.

Russia possesses the most nuclear weapons of any country, with 6,257 in total.

1,458 are active, which means they are actually deployed, 3,039 are available (and may be sent if necessary), and 1,760 are retired (out of use and awaiting dismantlement).

Overall, NATO and Russia have nuclear arsenals of comparable scale.

Last month, NATO General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg warned Moscow that a nuclear conflict would be impossible for Russia to win.

“Russia must recognise that it can never win a nuclear war,” he stated.

“NATO is not a party to the war… it gives assistance to Ukraine but is not a party to the fight.”

“NATO will not deploy soldiers to Ukraine… It is critical to offer assistance to Ukraine, and we are doing so.

“However, it is equally critical to avoid this dispute from escalating into a full-fledged war between NATO and Russia.”
