Food shortages have been raised throughout the world since Putin declared the start of his’special military operation’ in Ukraine on February 24. On April 21, several EU officials stated that they believe Putin is purposely causing a food security crisis in order to further destabilise the world and provoke new migration flows into Europe.
“It is incumbent upon the international community to stand up and take action to avert a global food security disaster,” US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman said in a speech in Brussels on Thursday.
“Deputy Secretary Sherman criticised Russia’s illegitimate and unprovoked war of choice against Ukraine and its ruthless methods, including appalling crimes,” the US Embassy in Italy noted in a handout following the meeting.
“The attendees highlighted the significance of giving further military and humanitarian supplies to Ukraine, as well as assisting the millions of people who have been displaced from their homes.”
“They also spoke about imposing further sanctions and other economic measures to hold the Russian Federation responsible.”
“All voiced worry about food security as a result of Russia’s conflict and agreed to collaborate to find answers.”
It comes after US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen blamed Russia’s conflict for increasing the world’s “already grave” food shortages.
Before the conflict, over 800 million people – or 10% of the world’s population – were suffering from chronic food insecurity, according to Ms. Yellen.
She told a panel that nations should avoid export prohibitions, which would raise prices even more, while increasing support for disadvantaged communities and smallholder farmers, a statement that German Finance Minister Christian Lindner echoed.
“I want to be clear: Russia’s actions are to blame,” she said, adding that the US was working quickly with partners and allies to “help alleviate the consequences of Russia’s reckless war on the world’s most vulnerable.”
