Biden says hate remains ‘stain on the soul of America’
President Joe Biden will provide an update on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Wednesday while working to finalise a new arms package for the country’s military.
At 9.45 a.m. (1345 GMT), Biden is expected to “provide an update on our efforts to support Ukraine and the assistance we are providing” from the White House Roosevelt Room.
A second US official told Reuters earlier that the new arms package would be similar to the $800 million announced last week.
In a risky new phase of the war, Biden convened US military leaders at an annual White House gathering on Wednesday.
Biden opened the meeting by praising the Ukrainian military’s toughness and praising NATO’s unity.
Russia claims to have entered a new phase of its operation to “liberate” the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine. Western allies expect Russia’s campaign to drag on for months, testing Ukrainian fighters’ combat abilities.
Russia says it began a “special military operation” to demilitarise and “denazify” Ukraine on Feb. 24. That’s a lie, say Kyiv and its Western allies.
The US is not directly fighting in Ukraine, but is arming, training, and funding its forces.
The US announced last week that it would send artillery systems, artillery rounds, armoured personnel carriers, and unmanned coastal defence boats to Kyiv.
Since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014, the US has provided over $3 billion in military aid.
Biden will then fly to the Pacific Northwest for two days to promote his domestic agenda.
