Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is “mirroring the totalitarianism and oppression” of World War Two Nazis, according to Defence Secretary Ben Wallace.

He accused Russian generals of stealing their “forefathers’ great past” as he spoke at a military parade commemorating the defeat of Nazi Germany.

Mr Wallace believes the generals should be tried for war crimes.

“There can be no triumph day, only humiliation,” the defence secretary stated.

He charged Russian President Vladimir Putin with “ripping apart Russia’s past and future.”

Mr Putin has been attempting to garner popular support for the conflict in Ukraine by attending Russia’s traditional 9 May Victory Day parade in Moscow.

Mr Wallace stated in a speech at the National Army Museum, “Putin, his inner circle and generals are now mirroring the fascism and tyranny of 77 years ago, repeating the errors of last century’s totalitarian regimes.”

He continued: “So let’s call out the absurdity of Russian generals – resplendent in their manicured parade uniforms and weighed down by their many medals – for being utterly complicit in Putin’s hijacking of their forebears’ proud history of defending against a ruthless invasion, of repelling fascism, of sacrificing themselves for a higher purpose.

“Instead now, they are the ones inflicting needless suffering in the service of lowly gangsterism,” he ended.

Mr Wallace, on the other hand, disagreed that the West intended to invade, claiming that Russian President Vladimir Putin had been making “fairy-tale assertions” for months. While Mr Putin stated that Russia was “encircled,” he maintained that Nato members only accounted for 6% of Russia’s land border.

Mr Putin “believes what he wants to believe,” the defence secretary said, adding, “Let me put it on the record categorically: Nato, Britain, Eastern Europe is not preparing to attack Russia and never has.”

The UK will continue to offer military and financial support to Ukraine, according to the prime minister’s spokesperson, and the government is “in this for the long haul.”
