NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Thursday found Hurriyat leader Yasin Malik guilty of terror-funding allegations after he pleaded guilty to all counts, including those under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, on Tuesday (UAPA).

Following the allegations, the court ordered Yasin to file an affidavit disclosing all of his sources of income and declaring all of his assets.

The court also ordered the Indian National Investigation Agency (NIA) to investigate Yasin’s financial position in order to determine the appropriate penalties to impose. On May 25, the sentence will be handed out.

According to NDTV, Yasin had refused to accept the charges, which included Sections 16 (terrorist act), 17 (fundraising for a terrorist act), 18 (conspiracy to commit a terrorist act), and 20 (membership of a terrorist gang or organisation) of the UAPA, as well as Sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 124-A (sedition) of the Indian Penal Code.

Yasin “had set up an elaborate structure and procedure around the globe to generate funds for carrying out terrorist and other unlawful acts in Jammu and Kashmir in the name of the ‘liberation struggle,” according to the court.

Following Yasin’s conviction, Pakistan denounced the “fabricated charges against him” and summoned the Indian charge d’affaires to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday.

According to a Foreign Office official, Pakistan has expressed “grave worry” that the Indian administration has “resorted to implicating indigenous Kashmiri leadership in false and motivated charges” in order to silence them.

According to a statement, “Neither the wicked Indian tactics of conjuring up bogus charges against Kashmiri leadership nor the environment of persecution, repression, and intimidation could quench the courageous struggle of the Kashmiris.”

Pakistan’s strong concern about Yasin’s detention in Tihar Jail under inhumane conditions since 2019 was also conveyed to the Indian side. His health had deteriorated due to the harsh treatment he had received despite his chronic illnesses and refusal of adequate health care facilities.

The Cd’A was advised to persuade his government that “rather than unlawfully holding the Kashmiri leadership hostage and depriving them of their fundamental human rights, it must immediately halt its state-sponsored terrorism in the IOJK, release all political prisoners incarcerated on trumped-up charges, stop human rights violations, lift the inhuman military siege, and allow the people of the IOJK to exercise their right to self-determination as enshrined

Pakistan demands Yasin Malik’s acquittal.
Pakistan has demanded that Yasin be acquitted of all false allegations and released from prison immediately so that he can be reunited with his family, recover his health, and resume his normal life.

Pakistan also urged the world community, particularly the UN and relevant human rights and humanitarian organisations, to take prompt notice of India’s inhumane treatment of one of Kashmir’s most renowned leaders, who has been leading a nonviolent independence struggle for decades.
