Russia announced the expulsion of five personnel from Croatia’s embassy in Moscow on Friday, after a similar step by Zagreb in response to Moscow’s military incursion into Ukraine.

Russia’s foreign ministry said it summoned Croatia’s ambassador to voice “strong protest over the Croatian authorities’ baseless attempts to implicate Russia in war crimes in Ukraine.”

The ministry was also accused of giving “military aid to the neo-Nazi authorities in Kyiv.”

It stated that “in response to the unfriendly steps previously taken by Zagreb,” five workers of Croatia’s embassy in Moscow were labelled “persona non grata.”

Croatia ordered the departure of 24 Russian embassy personnel in April in response to Moscow’s “brutal aggression against Ukraine.”
