According to state-owned news agency RIA Novosti, Russia has agreed to continue supplying Serbia with uninterrupted natural gas.

It follows a Sunday meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Serbian colleague Aleksandar Vucic.

“Putin and Vucic confirmed the desire of both Russia and Serbia to strengthen their strategic partnership on the basis of traditionally close connections between peoples of both countries,” the agency reported.

Serbia is not a member of NATO or the European Union. Its army maintains links with Russia’s military, and it is nearly totally reliant on Russian gas.

Despite voting in favor of two UN resolutions denouncing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the country refused to impose sanctions on Moscow.

The Kremlin also backs Belgrade’s resistance to Kosovo’s independence by preventing it from joining the United Nations.
