US accused one American ,four Chinese officials with spying

The Department of Justice said on Wednesday that a US citizen and four Chinese intelligence officials had been charged for spying on Chinese dissidents, human rights leaders, and pro-democracy campaigners in the United States.

According to the indictment (MSS), Wang Shujun, of Queens, New York, is accused of using his position among Chinese expatriate and dissident networks to gather information about activists on behalf of China’s Ministry of State Security.

The Justice Department said Wang, 73, was detained on March 16 and will be charged at a later date. Feng He, Jie Ji, Ming Li, and Keqing Lu, four MSS officials, are still at large, according to the department. The indictment was released in federal court in Brooklyn on Tuesday.

“Today’s indictment exposes and disrupts a PRC (People’s Republic of China) operation that threatens the safety and freedom of Chinese nationals residing in the United States on the basis of their pro-democracy beliefs and speech,” said US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, Breon Peace.

Wang’s representatives could not be reached for comment right away.

The Chinese embassy in Washington, DC, stated in a written statement sent to Reuters that “the so-called accusations made by the US are pure fiction.”

“We urge the US side to conduct a fair and lawful investigation, properly handle relevant cases, and safeguard the legal rights of the Chinese citizens involved.”
