In a remote area of Afghanistan where an earthquake killed 1,000 people, aid started to arrive on Thursday, according to Taliban officials who said the rescue effort was nearly finished.

Around 160 kilometres (100 miles) southeast of Kabul, amid parched mountains dotted with small communities close to the Pakistani border, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred early on Wednesday.

In a nation already dealing with a humanitarian catastrophe that has worsened since the Taliban took over in August, poor communications and a lack of adequate roadways are impeding relief attempts.

According to Mohammad Ismail Muawiyah, a spokesman for the top Taliban military commander in the most severely affected Paktika region, “the rescue operation is ended, no one is stuck under (the) wreckage.”

According to Mohammad Nassim Haqqani, a spokeswoman for the disaster ministry, rescue efforts have ended in most large districts but are still going on in a few isolated locales.

According to the United Nations, 90% of search and rescue activities were finished as of Thursday, as announced by the Taliban ministry of defence as early as Wednesday.

The possibility that the rescue effort could be nearly over so fast surprised two retired officers in Nepal who were involved in the aftermath of the 2015 earthquake that left 9,000 people dead, but one pointed out that it was feasible if most of the damaged homes were modest.

According to Muawiyah, the earthquake left roughly 1,000 people dead and 1,500 injured. Over 3,000 homes were completely destroyed.

According to the death toll, the earthquake in Afghanistan was the bloodiest in the past 20 years.
