The situation in Ukraine is currently the focus of a comprehensive conversation between EU leaders, who have also been debating their strategy for the Western Balkans since their meeting with regional leaders earlier this morning.
“Currently, there is a broad debate on Ukraine and the continuation of the morning discussion on the Western Balkans. At the moment, a short break has been announced, but the meeting will be resumed soon,” said by a diplomatic source
As previously mentioned, the European Commission released its assessment of the EU membership applications from Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine. The document states that the European Commission suggested giving Ukraine and Moldova EU candidate status along with a checklist of requirements to fulfil. Only a European viewpoint is advised for Georgia at this time, which in and of itself is a recognition of the nation’s obvious path to European integration.
The first item on the agenda of the European Council summit, which started today in Brussels, is consideration of the question of EU enlargement and providing candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova. To give the Western Balkan countries’ processes of European integration a fresh start, the EU Heads of State and Government met with their leaders in the morning.
