A car bomb exploded in the motorcade of a high-ranking security officer in Yemen’s southern port city of Aden on Wednesday afternoon, according to a government official.

“The car bomb blast hit the convoy of General Saleh Al-Sayd, commander of the Security forces in the neighbouring southern province of Lahj when his motorcade was passing through a main street near Aden’s airport,” a local government source stated on condition of anonymity.

The explosion reportedly killed at least five guards and two civilians and wrecked an armoured vehicle in the official’s convoy, according to the source.

As per the source, the security commander who was clearly the primary target evaded the attack since he was seated in another armoured vehicle.

Following the attack, local security officers were strongly deployed across the residential area of Khormakser, where the explosion happened, and roads were shut.

Local officials in Aden are attempting to preserve security and stability.

However, intermittent bombings and drive-by shootings continue to occur in the vital port city of Yemen.

Since late 2014, when the Houthis seized control of several northern districts and drove the internationally recognised government out of the capital Sanaa, Yemen has been embroiled in a civil war.
