  • Iran and the US have started indirect talks in Doha, Qatar, to try to resurrect a nuclear deal that Donald Trump ruined.
  • Iran has said it is willing to negotiate, but will not violate its “red lines” regarding the agreement’s implementation.

DOHA: Iran warned the US on Wednesday not to use the “Trump method” after the two countries started indirect talks to try to bring back a nuclear deal that Trump ruined.

However, Iranian officials expressed optimism about the Qatari talks, which come after international meetings to resurrect the agreement fell through.

Iran agreed to limit its nuclear programme in exchange for fewer sanctions in 2015. However, former US President Donald Trump pulled out of the deal three years later.

“We hope that God willing, we can reach a positive and acceptable agreement if the United States abandons the Trump method,”  said Ali Bahadori-Jahromi, a spokesman for the Iranian administration.

He defined the “Trump way” as “non-compliance with international law and prior agreements, as well as disrespect for the legitimate rights of the Iranian people.”

Two weeks prior to US President Joe Biden’s first official visit to the region, during which Iran will play a central role, the hostile delegations are engaged in indirect communication from separate portions of the same hotel.

As per Alex Vatanka, director of the Iran programme at the Middle East Institute think tank in Washington, soaring oil prices and the lack of spare capacity could provide Tehran with an opportunity to lobby for the removal of sanctions on Iranian crude.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian stated that Iran was willing to negotiate in Doha, but that it would not violate its “red lines.”

“We are serious” about concluding an agreement, he added, emphasising that his nation would not back down from the “red lines” it has established.

As quoted by the Iranian news agency, “If the American side has serious intentions and is realistic, an agreement is possible at this stage and in this round of negotiations.”

The Iranian news agency has said in the past that the “red lines” are the easing of all sanctions related to the nuclear agreement, the creation of a way to check that they have been lifted, and a promise that the United States will not pull out of the agreement.
