During his visit to Kyiv, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson suggested starting a significant training programme for Ukrainian forces that could train up to 10,000 soldiers every 120 days. This was stated by the UK government in a statement on Friday.

“As Ukrainian soldiers fire UK missiles in defense of your nation’s sovereignty, they do so also in defense of the very freedoms we take for granted. That is why I have offered President Zelensky a major new military training program that could change the equation of this war – harnessing that most powerful of forces, the Ukrainian determination to win,” Johnson said.

The UK-led effort would use British Army expertise to train and drill the Ukrainian Armed Forces, enabling them to speed up deployment, reassemble their forces, and ramp up resistance as they continue to protect the sovereignty of their country against Russian invaders. If Ukraine accepts the offer, international partners will be approached to host the programme.

The statement claims that from 2015 to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the UK trained more than 22,000 Ukrainian servicemen as part of Operation Orbital. The new initiative would train foreign-based armies.

The UK government also pointed out that Ukrainian soldiers were able to mount a fierce defence against Russia’s unlawful and unjustified invasion because to the battle-winning capabilities they learned over the seven-year course.

Each soldier is expected to spend three weeks on the training programme, where they will study methods for disarming explosive devices, basic medical training, and battle-winning skills for the front lines.

Along with the training proposal, the leaders reportedly talked about how the UK may be a key player in easing the grain blockade.

In addition to more than 5,000 NLAW anti-tank missiles, long-range multiple launch rocket systems, and artillery weapons including 155mm self-propelled guns, the UK has already committed more than GBP 1.3 billion in economic and humanitarian support to Ukraine.

For the second time since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began, Johnson travelled to Kyiv for business on June 17. Volodymyr Zelensky, the president, received him. Following the meeting, Zelensky and Johnson released a joint statement.
